On September 23, an International Scientific-Practical Conference dedicated to the 10th anniversary of bone marrow transplantation was held. The event was attended by more than 150 specialists from Azerbaijan, as well as from Turkey, the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, and Belarus.
Yegana Abbasova, Chair of the Board of the Organ Donation and Transplantation Coordination Center of the Ministry of Health, stated that during the 10 years of bone marrow transplantation in our country, 20-30 bone marrow transplant surgeries have been performed each year. She noted that approximately 30 kidney transplant surgeries are carried out annually under the state program.
Yegana Abbasova added that within the framework of the project to improve bone marrow transplantation services, 25 Azerbaijani citizens were sent to Turkey for bone marrow transplantation in July 2023, and the surgeries were successfully conducted.
"Additionally, on August 4, 2023, 150 kidney transplants, 100 liver transplants, and 20 bone marrow transplants were included in the package of services of the State Agency for Mandatory Medical Insurance. Since December 4, 2022, when our center began operations, 22 kidney transplant surgeries have been performed under the legal documents implemented by the Cabinet of Ministers," emphasized Y. Abbasova.
She also provided statistical information: "I would like to note that the number of surgeries performed in 2024 across all areas is equal to the number of surgeries conducted in 2023, meaning that there have been twice as many surgeries performed in the first half of 2024."
In her speech, the chair of the ODTKM Board discussed the center's goals for the future: "I hope and believe that we will soon achieve this, and just as we are the first in the region in organ transplants from living donors, we will also be first in organ transplantation from deceased donors."
Yegana Abbasova also called on those who wish to become donors.
